WE MUST STOP THE RIVALRY BETWEEN MEN, VEHICLES, CATTLE AND SHEEP ON OUR CITY CENTERS.
There are lots of benefits in animal rearing, particularly the raising of poultry, sheep and cattle. Those breeding animals speak of good financial returns in the sale of animals, especially during annual festivities like Christmas and Eid al Fitr and Adha. Nutritionists on their part say the animals that include chicken, cattle and sheep are sources of protein in our diets. Many homes cannot do without meat from sheep, cattle and chicken. Currently animal rearing in many African cities does not follow rules requiring animal farmers to keep them away from the city centers. Cattle are seen roaming freely, engaging in open defecation and blocking vehicular traffic in streets of Accra, Lagos, Abuja and other African cities. Currently authorities in Nigeria have begun moves to ban animal grazing in city centers.
As part of this move the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) in Nigeria, has commenced fight against cattle grazing and roaming in the Abuja city center. A Ministerial Task Team on Environment under the Chairmanship of Squadron Leader Abdullahi Monjel, has been inaugurated to keep the animals off the streets of Abuja. The ban on cattle movement in the city came amidst protests by residents that the animals constitute nuisance and threat to lives.
Apart from Abuja, Accra and the major towns in Ghana especially Nima, Sukura, are awash with goats, cattle, sheep and chicken on streets, obstructing traffic, and human movements. The animals do not only cause problems for pedestrians and vehicles they also ease themselves freely creating health problems for the communities. Many city dwellers have often lamented over the unfortunate situation calling on the authorities to do something about it. The Minister of Roads and Highways Hon Amoako Attah on his part has decided to take steps to find solution to the problem.
While the central government takes steps to deal with the problem of “free grazing animals” in our cities, the Accra Metropolitan Assembly and the other municipal and district assemblies have a duty to take steps to deal with the issue. The local government outfits must be up and doing in order for our cities and towns to be given an improved outlook devoid of the embarrassing competition between animals and people on our roads.
