SUPPORT GOVT’S JOB CREATION AGENDA. TRADE MINISTER URGES DEVT PARTNERS.
Trade minister, Mr Alan Kyerematen, has asked development partners to adjust their programmes to support the government’s agenda of creating more jobs.
He also urged them to think of ways to partner the government as the new leadership prepared to undertake reforms to boost Ghana’s economic fortunes.
Mr Kyerematen made the call when a European Union (EU) delegation to Ghana paid a courtesy call on him yesterday at the ministry of Trade and Industry.
The delegation was led by its Ambassador, Mr William Hanna.
The main purpose of the visit was to discuss how the EU and the ministry could work together to ensure that Ghana attained its development goals.
Mr Kyerematen outlined what he described as the government’s “ambitious plans” to implement numerous policies and programmes that would make the country’s economy become one of the best globally.
He highlighted the much talked about “one district, one factory” policy and other programmes designed specifically to help local businesses to attain international status.
Mr Kyerematen also talked about the government’s commitment to initiate reforms that would support local businesses to grow, as well as create a conducive environment for foreign investors to make Ghana their foremost investment destination centre.
On how to help indigenous businesses to grow, he said, the government would establish an industrial sub-contracting exchange that would provide a platform for small and medium enterprises to link up with large-scale businesses.
“Apart from that, we will also promote the production and consumption of made-in-Ghana goods to create the needed market for local businesses,” Mr Kyerematen added.
He talked about the government’s readiness to take advantage of the establishment of the continental free trade area to increase Ghana’s export, and added that “attention will also be shifted on exports to the US and EU markets.”
On how the government would work with the private sector to expand businesses, Mr Kyerematen said his ministry would soon come up with an annual presidential summit where the government would interface with the private sector.
For his part, Mr Hanna expressed the readiness of the union to partner the government and support its development agenda.
He also said the EU was willing to adjust its programmes to meet the specific objective of the government, adding that the union had no problem with assisting Ghana to attain its economic goals.
Mr Hanna said the EU’s major objective was to provide support for the government in the area of economic growth and development.
