FIVE SUSPECTED robbers are in hot waters after they were arrested in possession of guns and military uniforms whilst on their way to a mining site on a robbery expedition.

They are Ibrahim Tanko alias Joseph Nyfam, 23; Kwabena Awusu aka Kwabena Ibrahim, 24; Ernest Kwabena Oware aka Adogo, 19; Ansbert Yaw Amoah alias Labista, 25; and Jusitce Botchey, 28, a driver.

It is believed that they usually wear the military uniforms and pose as soldiers to rob their victims at gunpoint. Their arrest is a major breakthrough for the police in their fight against crime in the region.

The Ashanti Regional Police, acting upon intelligence, arrested the suspects, who were on their way to a mining site at Manso Nkwanta, around 1:30 pm on October 7 this year.

DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said a pump action gun and nine live cartridges, which were wrapped in a fertilizer sack and concealed under the rear of the bumper of the Opel Astra taxicab the suspects were travelling on, were retrieved.

He added that four sets of military uniforms were also found concealed in a big speaker at the booth of the car.

The police, during the search, also found a pair of military boots  and eight mobile phones the suspected robbers probably snatched from some of their victims in earlier robbery expeditions.

DCOP Kofi Boakye disclosed during a press conference that police had information that some armed men were onboard a white and yellow Opel Astra taxicab with registration number AS 1908-13 heading towards the Manso Nkwanta area to rob some miners.

Armed with this key information, the police hurriedly raced to the area and arrested the five suspects. After a thorough search, the offensive weapons and the military uniforms were found, he added.

DCOP Kofi Boakye said the five suspects are currently in police custody assisting in investigations, noting that their arrest was ample proof that the police were on top of the security situation in the region.

He sternly cautioned robbers in the Ashanti Region to turn over a new leaf in their own interest, stating categorically that the police, under his command, will continually make life uncomfortable for hoodlums in the region.
