The flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Akufo-Addo, has discounted claims by political analysts that the current standoff among the leadership of the party could cost them in the 2016 general elections.
Though he conceded that the party is currently facing some challenges, Nana Addo said the party is solid at the grassroot.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, Nana Addo said, “I see those challenges at the level of the national leadership; the steering committee and its members. You don’t see any of that on the grounds fortunately from our party.”
Speaking about the disagreements just before he embarked on his nationwide ‘Rise and Build’ tour, Nana Addo said the supporters at the grassroots are not really bothered about the wranglings among the leadership, but are rather focused on winning the elections for the party.
“It appears that a lot of people are determined to get on with the main task of winning minds, influencing the votes next year and hoping that we the leadership of the party will resolve whatever problems we have at the level.”
“I’m very happy that I did the tour, and I did it for two reasons. It is obvious from how the NPP people braced it in the countryside, and in the regions and constituencies that they needed something like this. Something that will reinvigorate the party and bring back the morale.
The way the tour was hailed across the country encouraged me considerably that the decision to do it has been very accepted. Secondly, it gave us the opportunity to send messages to the Ghanaian populace,” he added.
In a related development, the NPP flagbearer has urged Ghanaians to consider his ability to unify the country considering the policies outlined by the NPP to promote and strengthen unity in the country.
“The larger question of what you can do with the country of how you can bring the country together is very much a function of the kind of things that you will do, are you going to be faithful to the credo that you believe in one Ghana.
When you get to power are you going to favour only persons close to you or you are going to look at the merit of the people in the public service for them to end their promotion,” he said.
“There are things that you do which are even more important than the things that you say, those are the things that will identify your capacity to hold the centre and to hold the country together.
I believe the policies that we have, the focus with which we are looking at the problems of Ghana and the solution that we are providing are solutions that will allow the centre to hold and promote the unity and strengthening of our nation,” Nana Addo added.
