GHANA’S WORLD CUP HOPES FADE AFTER UGANDA DRAW.
The Black Stars have seen their chances of qualifying for next year’s World Cup in Russia fade after a goalless draw against Uganda in Kampala on Saturday.
Ghana, sitting third in Group E and already with only a slender chance of qualifying, needed a convincing win in their penultimate match at the Nelson Mandela Stadium, but ultimately came up short.
And the result means Egypt will qualify for the first time in 28 years with a win tomorrow against Congo Brazzaville.
Despite fielding a depleted side, the Black Stars put on a decent performance and probably could have won the day.
They were denied a penalty in the second half and scored a legitimate goal in injury time was disallowed by referee Bennette.
In the opening minutes, the home side were handed a free-kick just outside the penalty box but danger man Miya skied his effort.
In the 19th minute, goalkeeper Richard Ofori was forced to make a diving save on a low cross from the right which was later thumped away.
Just after the half-hour mark, Ghana found the back of the net but referee Daniel Bennett disallowed because scorer Daniel Amartey was offside. Alfred Duncan floated in a free kick from the right flank but the Leicester City man, who headed home, was clearly meters ahead of the Cranes defenders.
Two minutes later, right back Daniel Opare rushed into the box to meet a dipping corner kick from the left wing but the Augsburg defender’s touch went over the frame.
Uganda replied on 36 minutes when Kizito, inside the box unmarked, failed to apply a touch to a cross from the right
Two minutes from regulation time, Miya collected a miss-kicked pass inside the box but he smashed it just across the face of goal.
The first chance after the break fell to Uganda. Kizito was put through but he could connect with his left foot as the ball rolled over for goal kick.
A minute later, Derrick Nsibambic shocking missed from close range with a header after a cross from the left wing.
Ghana were denied a penalty after Frank Acheampong was pushed down inside the box but referee Benett waived to continue.
With a quarter of an hour left, Boakye shot feebly from 20 yards into the arms of goalkeeper Onyango.
The remainder of the minutes were topsy-turvy and both sides failed to create scoring chances.
At the death, striker Richmond Boakye unleased a belter which bounced off goalkeeper Onyango for Raphael Dwamena to connect home but the flag was up for offside when TV replay showed he was onside.
